CBD and Covid 19

As the number of cases (and more importantly, the deaths) from the Covid-19 Coronavirus start to decline, scientists are now starting to release data from trials using Cannabis (including Cannabidiol-CBD) to try and reduce symptoms of the virus.

Recent studies all seem to have a common finding, that CBD may help massively in fighting the severe respiratory symptoms of the Virus.

Here are a few verified articles from some of the world’s top virologist and scientists.

PubMed – “The potential of cannabidiol in the COVID-19 pandemic”

Abstract

Identifying drugs effective in the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is crucial, pending a vaccine against SARS-CoV2. We suggest the hypothesis that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid, has the potential to limit the severity and progression of the disease for several reasons:- (a) High-cannabidiol Cannabis sativa extracts are able to down-regulate the expression of the two key receptors for SARS-CoV2 in several models of human epithelia, (b) cannabidiol exerts a wide range of immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects and it can mitigate the uncontrolled cytokine production responsible for acute lung injury, (c) being a PPARγ agonist, it can display a direct antiviral activity and (d) PPARγ agonists are regulators of fibroblast/myofibroblast activation and can inhibit the development of pulmonary fibrosis, thus ameliorating lung function in recovered patients. We hope our hypothesis, corroborated by preclinical evidence, will inspire further targeted studies to test cannabidiol as a support drug against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientific Reports – “Cannabis compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory activity in vitro in COVID-19-related inflammation in lung epithelial cells and pro-inflammatory activity in macrophages”

Because CBD shows anti-inflammatory activity, and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of children with intractable epilepsy for seizure reduction, it has been suggested that CBD might alleviate COVID-19 related inflammation13. However, little is known regarding the effect of different cannabis compounds or their combinations on alveolar epithelial and immune cell inflammation.

Liebertpub – “Could Cannabidiol Be a Treatment for Coronavirus Disease-19-Related Anxiety Disorders?”

Observational and pre-clinical data also support CBD's therapeutic value in improving sleep (increased sleep duration/quality and reduction in nightmares) and depression, which are often comorbid with anxiety. Together these features of CBD make it an attractive novel therapeutic option in COVID-related PTSS that merits investigation and testing through appropriately designed randomized controlled trials.

News Medical Net – “Cannabis compound inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in human lung cells”

Marsha Rosner from the University of Chicago in Illinois and colleagues found that cannabidiol (CBD) and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD potently blocked SARS-CoV-2 replication in lung epithelial cells.

The CBD inhibited viral gene expression and reversed many of the effects the virus has on host gene transcription.

Similar stories are also being reported in some of the major tabloids too. This recent article from Forbes Magazine makes for great reading:

Forbes Magazine – “Compounds in Cannabis show promise as a treatment for Coronavirus infections”

It also goes into the importance of “Terpenes” (Terpenes are pungent compounds that plants produce to repel pests and attract pollinators. They’re responsible for the uplifting scent of citrus from fruits and the soothing aroma of lavender. Terpenes are also antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties).

(The research studied the antiviral action of a proprietary formula of terpenes, which are natural volatile compounds found in many plants including cannabis.

Covid-19 & Vitamin D

Another “go to” supplement linked to help fight the symptoms of Covid-19 Coronavirus has been Vitamin D. This information has been widely publicised in the media but unlike CBD, “Benefits are possible but evidence is sparse, indirect, and inconclusive” (https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n544)

One thing that all these studies do seem to agree on, is the importance of utilising all of the Cannabinoids, Terpenes and Flavonoids (all the good stuff that Mother Nature created) when taking CBD. The only way to achieve this is to ensure that you take a true “Full Spectrum” CBD product.
